United States House of Representatives (2009)
The United States House of Representatives is the lower house of the US legislature. It is made up of 435 voting members, each serving 2 year terms. In 2009, the 111th Congress, with Democratic majorities in both houses, was sworn in on January 3rd. This congress began its session right in the midst of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression – which had begun at the tail end of 2007. Of course, an immediate priority of this congress was to deal with the ongoing economic repercussions. Although with Democrats controlling all three branches, the administration sought to push for its desired healthcare reforms sooner rather than later during this time of ever-heightening polarization.
