United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
The UNDP focuses on helping countries achieve sustainable development, democratic governance and peace building, and climate and disaster resilience, all with a focus on protecting human rights and empowering women and minorities. In 2016, world leaders adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to expand the Millennium Development Goals. It is the UNDP’s priority to help all countries achieve the new Sustainable Development Goals. This year, the UNDP will function with an open agenda.
An open agenda means that there will not be a published list of two issues that are to be discussed as is customary in standing committees. Instead, delegates will arrive at the conference with a statement expressing why a certain issue is of more interest or importance to the delegation. The purpose of the open agenda is to broaden the critical thinking required of the delegates as committee members are forced to choose among a selection of critical issues. For the first two to three committee sessions, delegates will have to actively select the issue that the committee will address for the second half of the conference. The decision to debate a specific issue will be made official through the passage of a committee directive. The selected issue will then be debated and addressed, as would any topic in a standard JHUMUNC committee, with the end goal being to draft and pass a resolution. The open agenda structure will be fully detailed in the forthcoming committee guide.

Letter from the Chair
My name is Jenna Movsowitz, and I am your chair for United Nations Development Programme! First of all, I am so excited you’re coming to JHUMUNC 2018 and I can’t wait to meet you all! Last year, I was on crisis staff for JHUMUNC in the Quadrumivate committee. This year, I’m changing it up and channeling my high school MUN years by going back to a social standing committee for the first time as a chair instead of a delegate! I know what it’s like to be in your position, so I can’t wait to make this an amazing experience for you.
I am from Radnor, PA, and I am currently a sophomore at Johns Hopkins. I am a Writing Seminars major with a minor in Marketing & Communications! Outside of the classroom, I work in the marketing department of admissions, am in a sorority, and write for our admissions blog. In my free time, I love watching the cooking shows, exploring Baltimore, and finding creative ways to procrastinate.
This session, the United Nationals Development Programme will operate with an open agenda. This means that the committee will began in a “round robin” style, during which time each delegation will take the floor to voice their opinion on what issue the UNDP should focus. Therefore, the background guide will be a guide to Open Agenda, where I will discuss the structure of the committee. Since the UNDP has such a wide scope of issues of interest, this will allow each delegation to voice their national policies and interests and steer the committee to their benefit.
Please feel free to reach out to me while you prepare for committee! I’m more than happy to help you prepare to ensure your best possible JHUMUNC experience.
My dais staff and I cannot wait to work with you!
