The Sixth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, otherwise known as the Legal Committee, is responsible for the handling of international legal disputes and issues that present a threat to global peace and security. As one of the largest committees within the UN, Legal handles some of the most pressing and immediate worldwide topics, such as international terrorism, the role of international banks, and even the enforcement of climate protocol. The reach of this committee is far, and therefore all UN member states are entitled to representation within the Sixth Committee.
Topic A: Combating Internal Extremism

Letter from the Chair
It is with great excitement that I introduce myself, Bryan Gustafson, as your chair for the Legal Committee for JHUMUNC XXI! I cannot wait to meet you all and commence what will surely be an incredible weekend of debate, and hope you all share in my anticipation of the conference.
I am a senior Public Health Studies major here at Hopkins, but I’ve always had a strong interest in international politics and general debate. I’ve been involved with MUN for seven years now, three in high school and all four here at JHU! I’m a member of both JHUMUNC (obviously) and HopMUN, JHU’s own travelling model UN team that competes on the college circuit. Model UN has most certainly shaped a very large part of my life thus far, and I hope the same holds true for some of you; it’s an incredible experience that provides a host of benefits that you can take well beyond your years in school.
I also happen to have a connection to the Legal Committee, having served as a dais member my freshman and sophomore years. I took a brief hiatus over to crisis last year, but my heart pulled me back home, and I can’t wait to chair! Outside of MUN, I work in data collection and integration with the Johns Hopkins Medicine Armstrong Institute, act as philanthropy chair for my fraternity, and engage in a number of independent musical projects in my spare time. (see my photo from JHU’s last Spring Fair!) Even with these ECs, there’s still something special about MUN that could never be filled by another experience!
Our topics this year are International Immigration and Combating Internal Extremism. Needless to say, I believe both of these to be incredibly topical and am therefore very excited to hear your ideas and various representations of your delegations. There is a ton of great, eye-opening material out there where you can begin your research before delving into more country specifics, and I encourage you to start with a broad understanding of each issue.
While priority one will always be productive, meaningful debate, I hope to run a very fun, enjoyable committee for you all! One of the greatest parts of my MUN career has been meeting and socializing with people from all over the country and world, so I hope to facilitate similar experiences for you all as well. You never know whom you’ll meet at JHUMUNC, and that’s one of the coolest parts of the conference, so make sure to come prepared for debate but also ready to mingle and have fun! I think you’ll find doing so improves the quality of your performance in committee.
I cannot wait to meet you all and have what will surely be an amazing final JHUMUNC for myself, but more importantly an amazing conference for you all!
