Quadrumvirate: Pacific Theater of the Cold War – South Korea
With the end of the deadliest global war still in recent memory, the Republic of Korea is still struggling to rebuild. Under American control, the fledgling republic must unite and establish a new government to defend itself in the new global power struggle. However, there are communist and insurgent groups that are discontent with the division of the peninsula at the 38th parallel. Delegates must balance establishing a new democracy while defending itself from the Red Menace within. As a committee, it is our duty to halt these uprisings and take back control of our land.
Topic A: Combating Leftist and Populist Insurgencies
Topic B: Determining South Korea’s Role on the Peninsula and with Regional Powers

Letter from the Chair:
Welcome to JHUMUNC 2018! My name is Tatiana Sorenson and I am so excited to be your chair for the South Korean Committee. JHUMUNC has been one of my favorite things to do, both in high school and college, and I think I can fairly say that our committee is going to be one of the best ever.
I am originally from Frederick, Maryland, where I attended Oakdale High School. I joined our school’s MUN team in its second year of existence, when I was a senior. After my first conference, I knew I loved MUN and have been working with MUN ever since. I attended JHUMUNC my senior year of high school, and have worked with JHUMUNC while at college for the past three years.
Here at Johns Hopkins, I am a senior majoring in International Studies with a double minor in Linguistics and Russian. I like to stay busy and am subsequently involved in way too many groups on campus (although JHUMUNC is a favorite). After college, I plan to enter the public sector with a dream of joining the Foreign Service Department.
During my time with JHUMUNC I have worked exclusively with Quad committees and I can say hands-down that they are the most fun JHUMUNC has to offer. Get ready for fast-paced debate and constant excitement this February. As the South Korean, it is up to us to keep the other nations on their toes. In our committee you will have an opportunity to advance the Korean cause, in addition to working on your own agenda.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the committee, JHUMUNC, Model UN, Johns Hopkins, position papers, or if you just want to check in and say hello.
I hope y’all are just as excited about this committee as I am!
See you in February,
Chair, Quadrumvirate: 1949 Pacific Theater of the Cold War-South Korea
