World Health Organization
The World Health Organization was founded on April 7, 1948, today known as World Health Day. WHO is a specialized agency within the United Nations concerned with international public health, primarily with promoting healthy lifestyles, equal opportunities, and serving the vulnerable through multiple ways including assisting governments with health epidemics or outbreaks upon request, engage in research and work regarding prevention and termination of various illnesses, and promoting cooperation amongst medical professionals and researchers among many more. The primary role of the World Health Organization is, as stated above, to act as the coordinator for international health work for all member states part of the United Nations. The World Health Organization is never out of work; with severe illnesses and epidemics to be addressed, cured, and prevented, there is always something to do and an adversity to be embraced.

Letter from the Chair
Dear Esteemed Delegates:
Welcome to JHUMUNC XXIII! My name is Anya Gunewardena and I will be your chair for the World Health Organization (WHO) committee. I am very much looking forward to both meeting you and promoting engaging, invigorating debate regarding today’s world’s health positions.
I am a sophomore at Johns Hopkins, originally from Summit, New Jersey and Plantation, Florida, majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology and minoring in Psychology and Business. On campus, in addition to JHUMUNC, I am on the Women’s Varsity Tennis Team, in the Sirens Acapella Group, in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and on the Hopkins Model United Nations Team.
This will be my second year at JHUMUNC and my sixth overall year doing Model United Nations, having been introduced as a freshman in high school. I have always loved Model UN from the beginning and truly miss being a delegate, but I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience on the other side of the committee room as I was a dais member for the Historical GA Committee in JHUMUNC XXII.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, comments, or concerns; I will do my best to respond as quickly and efficiently as possible to all of you. My dais members and I are beyond excited to meet all of you at JHUMUNC XXIII and see what WHO has in store!
Chair, World Health Organization
