The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) is a multilateral finance organization founded in 1964 working to foster economic and social development in its eighty member states throughout the world. They do this through loans and equity investments, the promotion of both public and private investment, and the provision of advice and technical assistance to its members. The institution also includes the African Development Fund and the Nigeria Trust Fund, both aimed at targeting growth and poverty reduction in its poorest member states. Currently, the institution is limited by its low investment allocations ($3 billion annually) and donors have concerns about its effectiveness and credibility. The AfDB has already been recommended operational and strategic reforms to address these concerns, and needs to continue increasing funding and internal improvements to more fully address increased development needs in Africa.

Dear Honorable Delegates,
Welcome to JHUMUNC XXII! My name is Claire Chen and I will be both the Director of ECOSOC Committees and your chair for the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) committee. I look forward to working with all of you to promote equitable investment and development both economically and socially through this institution.
I am a sophomore at Johns Hopkins originally from Tampa, Florida, majoring in International Studies and Political Science. On campus, besides JHUMUNC, I am a Peer Advisor at the Career Center, a Group Management Intern at the Center for Social Concern, and a member of Alpha Phi Omega, the national service fraternity.
This is my third year at JHUMUNC and my seventh year overall doing Model UN, having been introduced to MUN as a freshman in high school. I've always been passionate about MUN, and have enjoyed participating on both sides of the dais, as a delegate and as a chair. I was a dais member for DISEC for JHUMUNC XX and the Director of Press Corps for Session XXI. I have also chaired for the Florida High School MUN Conference (FHSMUN) the last two years.
I wish all of you luck in the process. Please feel free to reach out to me for any questions, comments, or discussions, and I will get back to you as soon as I can. My dais members and I cannot wait to meet you at JHUMUNC XXII!
Chair, African Development Bank Group
Director of ECOSOC Committees
